Connecting the Dots Between Maluku and the Netherlands - Indonesia
Connecting the Dots Between Maluku and the Netherlands
Ambassador Marc Gerritsen led a meaningful working visit to Ambon in early April alongside the Embassy’s Education and Science Team, a trip that further underscored the deep and enduring ties between the Netherlands and the Maluku region.
The visit opened with substantive meetings with Governor Hendrik Lewerissa and Mayor Bodewin Wattimena, joined by the Honorary Consul in Ambon. Conversations spanned a broad and promising agenda, from economics and tourism to education, culture, and sport, laying the groundwork for concrete partnerships that serve both communities.
Engagement with the academic community was a highlight of the trip. Discussions at Pattimura University and UIN Abdoel Mutalib Sangadji explored collaborative opportunities in research, exchange programmes, and capacity building, all aimed at empowering the next generation of Malukan leaders to thrive on a global stage.
A networking dinner brought together alumni, members of the Netherlands-Indonesia community, and local entrepreneurs in a setting that reminded us why diplomacy ultimately comes down to people. The energy in the room reflected a shared enthusiasm for building bridges, and a genuine desire to turn goodwill into action.
The visit concluded with a series of historical site visits that grounded the trip in its deeper context: Fort Amsterdam, Museum Siwalima, the Archive Office, and the Rumphius Library, each a testament to the long, intertwined histories of the Netherlands and Maluku. These are not just monuments to the past; they are invitations to reflect, learn, and move forward together.
This was a truly enlightening visit to the heart of the Maluku Islands. The conversations have been had, the connections made, now comes the most exciting part: turning them into impact. We look forward to what comes next!
