Commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the End of World War II in Asia
Commemorative ceremonies were held at four Dutch war cemeteries, Ereveld across Indonesia—Cimahi, Bandung, Surabaya, and Jakarta.
This year marks eight decades since the cessation* of World War II in Asia*—a solemn moment that invites us to reflect not only on the past but also on the future lessons to teach us about peace and shared humanity.
Commemorative ceremonies were held at four Dutch war cemeteries, Ereveld across Indonesia—Cimahi, Bandung, Surabaya, and Jakarta.
Around 600 individuals gathered across these sites, representing a rich tapestry of backgrounds yet united in a spirit of remembrance and hope. Families of war victims, members of the Dutch community in Jakarta, Indonesian government officials, military attaches representing Asia-Pacific countries, local community representatives, students, and public stood side by side in quiet reflection and mutual respect.
These moments of remembrance are not only about honouring the past—they are about shaping a more compassionate future. May these commemorations serve as a bridge for continued dialogue, understanding, and cooperation between nations and generations.
Let us learn from history together, so that we may protect the peace and dignity of the future.
*The formal end of the Second World War was concluded with the Surrender Ceremony on the USS Missouri on 2 September 1945.
