What we do - Ghana

What do we do?

Management

As of Tuesday 7th September, 2021,  H.E. Mr. Jeroen Verhuel, assumed office as  Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of Ghana.

Ms Wendy van Meel is the Deputy Head of Mission as well as Head of the Development Cooperation and the Trade and Economic Cluster.

Trade and Economy

The Netherlands and Ghana have close commercial relations. The Netherlands is one of the top five importers from Ghana, due to Cocoa. Oil has been found offshore in 2007 in there is production of oil since the end of 2010. The economy is still largely dependent on the production and export of two primary goods, cocoa and gold, although the recent discovery of oil help diversify both activities and sources of revenue.

Personal contact is important when doing business in Ghana. This does not need to be difficult however, as there are daily flights Amsterdam - Accra and vice versa. Companies that are planning to explore the Ghanaian market are invited to enquire further information from the Embassy. The Embassy works closely together with the Ghanaian Netherlands Chamber of Commerce and Culture (Ghanecc). For more information please visit their website at www.ghanecc.com. Ghanecc provides companies with useful information and is a good network for sharing information.

Programmes like ORIO, Private Sector Investment (PSI), 2xplore and Matchmaking Facility (MMF) are important catalysers for trade and development. More information on these programmes can be found on this website and Netherlands Enterprise Agency | RVO.nl.

Press and Cultural Affairs

The Republic of Ghana and the Kingdom of the Netherlands share a long history of which tangible and intangible evidence remains. The shared cultural heritage of the two countries, which is identified at present as Mutual or Common Cultural Heritage, is an integral part of the prevailing bi-lateral relations. It is a reminder of the shared history of the two countries and of that in the field of cultural heritage in particular. It refers to both movable and immovable cultural objects that are an expression of the long historic ties between the two countries making the objects significant to the history and culture of both countries. By the common cultural Heritage fund, the Embassy provides for funding in order to preserve the rich shared cultural heritage. More information can be found on this website.

Development Cooperation

The embassy is engaged in development activities, based on the Multi-year Annual Strategic Plan from 2012-2015. The embassy engages actively the government of Ghana and the private sector to deliver on this agenda. The bilateral focuses on three themes: water, agricultural modernization and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRGR). Ghanaian development policy increasingly relies on private sector initiatives and funding. The role of the public sector on the economy will change as private sector actors will gain prominence. During the transition period external funding will shift from grants to concessional lending and private sector investment. Against the backdrop of the Netherlands phasing out development cooperation funding to Ghana by 2020, the development cooperation portfolio is designed to be sustainable on their own by that time frame.

Further information on activities being undertaken under the development cooperation portfolio can be found on this website.
