Sustainability workshop - Finland

Sustainability workshop

‘Mission Sustainable’ is in initiative by our Ministry (the Ministry of Foreign Affairs). In many of the ministries’ policies sustainability plays an important role. At the embassy in Helsinki, Finland, we want to ‘walk our talk’ and become more sustainable in our own way of working. The focus is on climate change, circular economy, and human rights.

Sustainability workshop at the embassy in Helsinki

Ethica Finland, a company specialized in helping other companies and organizations in their path towards a planet-positive future, hosted a workshop for our team. Together we brainstormed on bigger and smaller things that we can do/change at the everyday-work-at-the-office and at the various events that we organize. Some of the ideas are ‘low hanging fruit’ and can be implemented right away. Some other ideas involve other departments, need investment and take longer time to implement.

We also concluded that there are quite many good things already, for example:
🔸 We try to walk/cycle to meetings or use public transportation (also to get to/from work)
🔸 We sort and recycle our waste
🔸 Soon we will be getting an electric embassy car
🔸 We try to limit the use of paper, printing and other office supplies
🔸 More than half of our team is vegetarian
🔸 We don’t use disposable plates/glasses/cutlery at our events
🔸 We send digital invites for our events

Some of the things that we can improve right away:
🔸 Turn of lights in rooms that are not occupied
🔸 Use eco-friendly hand soap, cleaning detergents products and dishwasher detergent
🔸 Reduce food waste even more
🔸 Use less plastic (bring self-made food from home!)
🔸 Better focus on gender balance when inviting (panel) speakers

We encourage everyone to think about what small (and big) things you could change!
