The Netherlands and Chile: Partnering on Renewable Hydrogen - Chile EN
This page explains how the Netherlands and Chile collaborate on renewable hydrogen (RH2). It highlights Dutch expertise and infrastructure, Chile’s ambitions to become a global leader in green hydrogen, and the bilateral and EU-level partnerships that connect both countries. You’ll also find information on Dutch innovation, hydrogen valleys, and opportunities for cooperation.
Renewable Hydrogen in the Global Energy Transition
Climate change requires urgent international collaboration. Renewable hydrogen (RH2) is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of a climate-neutral economy. It enables:
- Seasonal energy storage,
- Balancing supply and demand,
- Decarbonizing heavy industry and transport,
- Supporting large-scale wind and solar investments.
The Netherlands as Your Renewable Hydrogen Partner
The Netherlands is strategically positioned to serve as a renewable hydrogen hub for Northwestern Europe. With world-class ports, offshore wind farms, and advanced infrastructure, the country can support every step of the RH2 value chain: import, production, storage, and distribution.
Key assets include:
- Port of Rotterdam: Europe’s largest port, developing hydrogen corridors and conversion parks.
- Gasunie & HyStock: Building hydrogen networks and underground storage (operational by 2026).
- Existing gas infrastructure: Confirmed by HyWay27 to be adaptable for hydrogen transport.
- Industry clusters: Chemical, steel, ammonia, and refineries ready to scale RH2 applications.
Dutch Hydrogen Expertise
The Netherlands combines decades of experience in natural gas with cutting-edge research in electrochemistry. Dutch institutions and companies are advancing electrolyser technology, scaling hydrogen solutions for heavy industry, and applying nature-based approaches to infrastructure. Through a EUR 838 million allocation from the National Growth Fund, GroenVermogenNL plays a pivotal role in driving hydrogen innovations, stimulating the production, use and import of green hydrogen.
Europe’s First Hydrogen Valley
The Northern Netherlands hosts Europe’s first Hydrogen Valley, Heavenn, integrating the entire value chain: production, storage, transport, and applications. With over 30 subprojects, it demonstrates how hydrogen can transform industry, residential energy, and mobility.
Chile’s Green Hydrogen Ambitions
Chile aims to become one of the world’s largest and most affordable hydrogen producers by 2035, leveraging its vast solar and wind resources. Its RH2 Action Plan 2023–2030 outlines:
- Pilot projects like Haru Oni (synthetic fuels from wind power),
- Large-scale ammonia projects in the north,
- Industrial hydrogen valleys in Concepción,
- International cooperation and investment via CORFO and InvestChile.
Netherlands - Chile Partnerships on Green Hydrogen
The Netherlands and Chile have formalized cooperation through:
- MoU with Port of Rotterdam (signed 2021, renewed 2023): Establishing export-import corridors for green hydrogen.
- Joint Statement & Agenda for Strategic Cooperation (signed in 2023, updated in 2024): Collaboration on zero-emission shipping, policy exchange, and sustainable aviation fuels.
- Trade Missions (in Chile and the Netherlands): Organized by RVO, Embassy of the Netherlands in Chile, Embassy of Chile in the Netherlands, ProChile, and InvestChile.
- Partners in Business (PIB) Program: “Green Energy Corridor Chile–Netherlands” coordinated by Rotterdam Partners.
- The Netherlands and Chile are also part of the International Hydrogen Trade Forum (IHTF), a coalition that brings together 14 governments to accelerate international hydrogen trade.
EU- Chile Cooperation
Beyond bilateral ties, the Team Europe Initiative (TEI) supports Chile’s hydrogen development. Implemented by GIZ, TEI fosters:
- Investment opportunities,
- R&D collaboration,
- Infrastructure and sustainability assessments,
- Knowledge transfer and capacity building.
Working Together with the Netherlands on Renewable Hydrogen
The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Chile supports partnerships in renewable hydrogen. We connect Chilean stakeholders with Dutch companies, knowledge institutes, and government partners to co-develop projects in production, storage, transport, and applications.
Let’s build the green energy corridor together—linking Chile’s renewable potential with Europe’s demand.
