NBSO Southern Brazil - Brazil

NBSO Southern Brazil

NBSO Porto Alegre is part of the Dutch Economic Network in Brazil since 1998.
The office is responsible for assisting Dutch companies that prospect economic activities in South Brazil - Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Santa Catarina (SC) and Paraná (PR) - supporting them in the strengthening of economic, political, academic and cultural ties, and developing international cooperation in the region.
The NBSO work closely together with local stakeholders, both from the public and the private sector, always looking for innovative and integrated approaches and co-creation of joint projects and opportunities.

Green Ports Partnership

Southern Brazil is home to world-class ports, and many rivers and terminals, a major asset for logistics and distribution operations. NBSO Porto Alegre is one of the initiators of the Green Ports Partnership.

The goal of the partnership is to promote cooperation between Brazilian and Dutch public and private entities, to generate business opportunities in the maritime market. The focus is on the sustainable and innovative development of Brazilian ports, waterways, and terminals & port logistics, as well as port-related renewable energy projects (e.g. offshore and nearshore wind power & green hydrogen).

Energy

There are various possibilities for partnerships between companies and institutions from the Netherlands and the southern Brazilian states, such as in the field of offshore, onshore, and nearshore wind energy, hydrogen and biogas.

Wind

The high potential of Rio Grande do Sul to generate renewable energy can lead the state to attract more investments, to become internally independent on energy supply and eventually export it. The Wind Atlas is available in the Environment and Infrastructure State Secretariat website.

Near shore: structures in three lagoons, 5 meters depth, near the state shore of Rio Grande do Sul has potential to generate 33,9 kMW.

Offshore: considering heights of 100 meters to capture wind and sea water depth up to 50 meters the potential to generate is around 80.3 kMW in Rio Grande do Sul.

Biogas

The region has the largest swine and poultry industry of the country. A consistent market research about the current stages of Biogas and Biomethane and opportunities for Dutch companies in Brazil is available at the RVO website.

Agriculture

Southern Brazil congregates a large number of Dutch immigrants that pursue high-quality standards to their local companies in the agri sector, especially in which concerns to food cooperatives and agricultural machinery from the industry 4.0.
The region represents an important market opportunity for global food producers, distributors and retailers.
Together, the Netherlands and Southern Brazil have a huge potential for trading and partnering in the fields of sanitizing, cutting, freezing, weighing, packaging, tracking and processing fruits, vegetables, cereals, meat and dairy products.
The region is also receptive to implement reforestation and landscape restoration projects via carbon neutralization. Farmers are helped in (sub)tropical areas to become a sustainable farm with the addition of agroforestry. Pilot project information link.

Water and Sanitation

Irrigation

Brazil has always been considered a country rich in water. However, Brazil's hydro-climatic regions and irrigation systems vary widely. In South Brazil, with weather conditions similar to the Netherlands, there is potential for Dutch providers of irrigation solutions to partner with Brazilian parties.

Sanitation

The new Brazilian legislation on water and sanitation of 15 July 2020, set greater incentives for private sector participation, and granting of water and sanitation services in regional blocks. The framework establishes a plan to bring full safe water and sanitation services to 90% of Brazilian households, up from 50% currently. The government projected that about BRL700bn (US$130bn) in capital investments will be needed to meet the 2033 goal, split 40% water supply and 60% sanitation. To get to this quantum of investment, it is necessary to attract more international investors. Dutch suppliers are welcome to contact NBSO Porto Alegre about the opportunities in this market.

Life, Science & Health

There are several world class Innovation Centers in South Brazil worth a visit. For example, the according to the World's Best Hospitals 2023 ranking, released by Newsweek magazine, UMCG signed an international partnership with local universities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, PUCRS and UFRGS.

Dutch companies and institutions are more than welcome to contact NBSO Porto Alegre and get to know more regarding collaboration.

Areas of opportunities for Dutch companies:
1.         Healthy Ageing
2.         Innovation Centers
3.         Solutions in Data Science

In 2019 a Life Sciences & Health sectors report was commissioned by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO.nl) and is produced by the Task Force Health Care (TFHC) in cooperation with the Netherlands consulate-general in São Paulo and the Netherlands Business Support Office Porto Alegre.
