The Dutch delta has the world’s best flood defences. 70% of the Dutch population lives below sea level. That’s why the Netherlands has so much expertise in flood control and clean water.
The Netherlands works together with other countries to tackle water-related issues around the world, like irrigation, safe river banks and clean drinking water. Our country also contributes to transboundary management of 7 international river basins in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
A Special Envoy for International Water Affairs has been appointed to promote Dutch knowledge and expertise in the area of water management.

The Netherlands endorses international agreements on reducing CO2 emissions and the depletion of natural resources.

In Vietnam
Vietnam and the Netherlands have a strategic partnership on climate change adaptation and water management. Together we work on a variety of subjects, including the sustainable development of the Mekong Delta. But our cooperation also covers water supply and sanitation. In recent years the Netherlands supported Vietnam with +- USD 10 million on water supply and sanitation projects. And we work together in the fields of knowledge exchange, capacity building and business development for a more sustainable future. An example is our innovative Geodata for Agriculture and Water program, in which we stimulate the development of clever communication technology tools to help farmers with, for instance, reduce their water and pesticide use.
