Working in the Netherlands (for residents in Hong Kong)

Do you currently live in Hong Kong? And are you thinking about working in the Netherlands? There are several things you need to arrange.

Entry requirements (visa, work permit)

The website of the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) tells you what conditions you need to satisfy and what documents you need if you want to work in the Netherlands.

Contributing to the Dutch economy, culture or science

Are you a highly skilled migrant or an investor? Or are you starting a business? If you can contribute to the Dutch economy or to Dutch culture or science, you are more likely to be admitted to the Netherlands.

Working Holiday Program

The Working Holiday Program (WHP) is a mutual cultural exchange program between Hong Kong and the Netherlands. Are you at least 18 but under 31 years of age? You can come to the Netherlands for a maximum of 1 year to get to know the Dutch culture. For this, you need to apply for a residence permit.

Prior online appointment is required. The following documents should be submitted:

  • a completed and signed MVV application form;
  • a completed and signed information sheet: Information for application for a Working Holiday;
  • a valid passport
    Attention: if you want to avoid renewing your passport during your stay in the Netherlands, make sure that your passport is still valid for at least 18 months at the day of your applicaton;
  • your Hong Kong Identity Card;
  • two passport photographs, which must meet the Dutch requirements for passport photos;
  • a copy of the holder page of your passport;
  • a return travel ticket or proof of sufficient financial means to purchase such a ticket.

After approval of the MVV and residence permit by the IND of the Netherlands you will be contacted by the consulate general that you are requested to visit the consulate general to affix the visa in your passport. Please be notified that you must affix your visa in your passport before you enter the Netherlands.

Note: a maximum of 100 Hong Kong citizens can participate in the WHP per year. Before applying, please check with the Dutch consulate-general in Hong Kong  if the maximum has been reached.
