Security and stability
The Netherlands is your partner in promoting peace and stability.
Lasting peace requires long-term cooperation with local and regional partners, so that we can respond when trouble spots emerge and prevent new conflicts from arising.
Peacekeeping missions
The Netherlands participates in United Nations (UN) missions to help promote peace and protect civilians. Since 1947 more than 125,000 Dutch troops have taken part in over 60 UN peace missions. The Netherlands also supports reconstruction efforts in countries affected by war.
The Netherlands Armed Forces contributed personnel to the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO), the mission that supervises the implementation of the security provisions of the Egyptian-Israeli Treaty of Peace and employs best efforts to prevent any violation of its terms.
Although the Netherlands does not contribute personnel anymore, we still financially support the MFO that is not only one of the most successful and long lasting missions, but until today plays a very important role in the stability in the Sinai and the region.
UN Security Council seat
In 2017 and 2018 the Netherlands and Italy will share a seat on the United Nations Security Council.
During their membership the Netherlands and Italy will focus their efforts on:
- conflict prevention
- peacekeeping
- the protection of civilians during conflicts
- the rule of law
- the effects of climate change on peace and security.

SRHR and family planning
The Netherlands helps the Egyptian government with its policy on population growth.
The Netherlands cooperates with UNFPA to contribute to the National Family Planning Programme. They organize awareness campaigns and toolkits that help to advise future parents, as well as peer education programmes.
Support to refugees and migrants and their host communities
The Netherlands works together with UNICEF to improve access to education for refugee and migrant children in Egypt, and to protect them from violence and abuse.
The most vulnerable children in major urban centres with high refugee and migrant concentrations, namely Greater Cairo, Alexandria, Damietta, Al Behira, Kafr Al Shiekh, Marsa Matrouh, Aswan, and the Red Sea, are the main target of the cooperation.
