Development Cooperation
The Kingdom of the Netherlands aims to support Egypt and its people in attaining an inclusive, just, and prosperous society. Through its different programmes, the embassy in Cairo strives to promote inclusive growth through sustainable trade and investment, improve food security, water and natural resources management, and to contribute to a more inclusive and cohesive society through partnerships with the Government of Egypt and a number of local and international organisations.

Local initiatives
The embassy primarily supports different local initiatives, which aim to empower Egyptian women and youth socially and economically. Towards this end, the embassy aspires to intensify its support to programmes providing skills development and decent employment opportunities for youth and women in marginalized communities, in addition to facilitating better access to basic services for disadvantaged groups.
In partnership with Egyptian civil society organisations, international NGOs and UN agencies, the NL aspires to contribute to the following priority areas in Egypt:

Women’s rights and gender equality

The Netherlands partners with the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Egypt and the Federation of Egyptian Industries (FEI) to advocate for gender equality at work, and to help private firms in Egypt in learning from good examples and implementing human resource (HR) policies that give equal opportunities to men and women. To reach this goal an HR Academy is established.

Empowerment of Girls through Sports is a project in partnership with North-South Consultants Exchange, giving teenage girls in the countryside opportunities to practice sports, and learn about health, wellbeing, and personal development on the side.
Poverty reduction and socio-economic development
The Netherlands collaborates with UNDP Egypt to provide women in Qena and Luxor, two governorates in Upper Egypt, with literacy classes, practical skills training, and entrepreneurship education.

Support to refugees and migrants and their host communities
The Netherlands works together with UNICEF to improve access to education for children of refugees, migrants, and their neighborhoods and to protect them from violence and abuse. The most vulnerable children in major urban centres with high refugee and migrant concentrations, namely Greater Cairo, Alexandria, Damietta, Al Behira, Kafr Al Shiekh, Marsa Matrouh, Aswan, and the Red Sea, are the main target of the cooperation.
SRHR and family planning
The Netherlands helps the Egyptian government with its policy on population growth. The Netherlands cooperates with UNFPA to contribute to the National Family Planning Programme. They organize awareness campaigns and develop toolkits that help to advise future parents, as well as peer education programmes.

Access to justice
The Netherlands and UNICEF Egypt provide community service, training, and rehabilitation opportunities for children in conflict with the law as alternatives to detention. This helps them to stay away from criminal activity and help them to find decent employment in the future.
