500 years Dutch farmers in Denmark: History

In 1521 Danish King Christian II invited farmers from the Waterland area in the Netherlands to Denmark because of their innovative agricultural and horticultural know-how.

Feeding the king

These Dutch settlers supplied the Danish court and the capital with fruit, vegetables, and flowers. Descendants of those families still live on the Island of Amager. Their Dutch heritage remains very prominent.
