Human Rights

Human rights are rights that apply worldwide, to all people, in all places, at all times. They are the foundations of a democracy in which every person counts. The Netherlands strives to protect and promote human rights worldwide. Therefore we employ a wide array of actions and initiatives geared towards the strengthening of human rights.

Human Rights Fund

In Brazil the Embassy of the Kingdom of The Netherlands launches an annual call for proposals for the human rights fund. Calls will be published on this website. Organisations can apply for funding in case their project falls under one of the six priorities of the human rights policy of The Netherlands. The six priorities are:

  • freedom of expression and internet freedom
  • freedom of religion or belief
  • equal rights for LGBTI persons
  • support for human rights defenders and space for civil society
  • equal rights for women and girls
  • international accountability for the most serious crimes

Orange the world: supporting women's rights

The Netherlands strongly supports equal rights for women and girls worldwide and we say NO to violence against women and girls. As part of the orange the world campaigne, The Netherlands for example organised a digital HagueTalks in Brazil to raise awareness on the individual role everyone plays in the prevention and response towards violence against women and girls. To see what you yourself can do, check out the video of the event in English or Portuguese.

Equal rights for LGBTI persons

The Netherlands stands up for equal rights for LGBTI persons worldwide. In Brazil for example, we organised an event in Rio de Janeiro together with the Brazilian LGBTI Chamber of Commerce & Tourism discussing topics such as increased acceptance, tolerance and the fundamental freedom to be the person you want to be. The event ended with a fashion show with only transgender and transvestite models.
