Interactive Dialogue with Special Rapporteur Human Rights Defenders
Statement of the Kingdom of the Netherlands delivered by Ms. Lieke Brand, Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the UN in Geneva
Thank you President,
We thank the Special Rapporteur for her insightful report on the situation of human rights defenders working in isolated, remote and rural contexts.
The Kingdom of the Netherlands emphasizes the observation of Ms. Lawlor that these human rights defenders are often overlooked in existing protection mechanisms, while they face specific risks and challenges. Therefore, in its diplomatic efforts and programming, the Dutch government aims to engage with and strengthen the position of defenders in remote areas, to better understand their specific needs and enable cooperation.
Access to legal, digital, financial and other protection resources is crucial to support human rights defenders in remote contexts to do their work in safety. Recognition of their rights and contributions is equally essential, as these defenders often face challenges in being acknowledged. We therefore call on all States to actively reach out and share resources to promote the life-saving work of these human rights defenders.
Special Rapporteur,
How can community-support networks be
integrated within early warning systems to ensure timely and
coordinated responses to threats faced by human rights defenders in
isolated, remote and rural contexts?
Thank you
