Social security in the Netherlands

If you are going to live or work in the Netherlands, go to to check whether you are insured against illness or unemployment.

Am I insured or not?

If you have an employment contract you are automatically insured if you are unable to work due to illness or disability or you lose your job. You will also be covered during pregnancy and maternity leave. As an employee you build up pension entitlement. And you may be entitled to other allowances such as surviving dependants' benefits or child benefit.

Your situation may be different if:

  • you don't work
  • you are self-employed
  • you work for a foreign employer

The website of the Social Insurance Bank (SVB) explains what you are and are not insured against in each situation.
