Driving in the Netherlands

If you visit the Netherlands as a tourist, you can drive here with a foreign driving licence. If you live in the Netherlands, even for a short time, different rules apply.

I'm visiting the Netherlands

You are allowed to drive in the Netherlands as long as you have a valid foreign driving licence.

I'm living in the Netherlands permanently or temporarily

Foreign nationals living in the Netherlands can continue to use their own driving licence for a limited time. The length of this period depends on the country where your driving licence was issued. After that, you'll need to exchange your driving licence for a Dutch driving licence, or sit your driving test again.

The Road Transport Agency (RDW) has more information about driving with a foreign driving licence in the Netherlands.
