Vacancy for a Policy Advisor in the Fields of Economy and Culture at our Consulate in Cape Town

The Consulate-General of the Netherlands in Cape Town has per direct a job opening for a Policy Advisor who has extensive economic experience and an affinity with cultural affairs. We are looking for a professional with a proven track record, who has an open mind is driven by values such as diversity, equality and inclusiveness and who is a real team player. Number of working hours per week: 37,5 (fulltime)

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Policy Advisor gives advice on the implementation of the economic focus areas, based on independent analysis of Dutch priorities/supply and South African demand.
  • Provides written information on the economic focus areas.
  • Builds and maintains a network with relevant partners in both South Africa and the Netherlands (public, private and civil society)
  • Contributes to the visibility and positive image of The Netherlands through external communication and public diplomacy, social media, Embassy website and NL branding.
  • Coordinates with the members of the economic team to identify commercial opportunities and, where possible, match Dutch and South African parties in order to enhance Dutch trade and investment into South Africa and enhance our bilateral ties.
  • Supports the cultural agenda to bring Dutch and South African parties together under the #CoCreateSANL banner.
  • Initiates, supports and accompanies missions from the Netherlands to South Africa and contributes to missions from South Africa to the Netherlands;


Education level: Academic.

Work experience: minimum of 5 years relevant experience

We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, proactive and an analytically strong policy advisor. A networker who demonstrates initiative, who is customer and results oriented, can work easily with others and whose oral and written communication skills are strong. Analytical and written communication skills will be tested during the interview process. You have prior work experience and extensive knowledge in the trade and economic fields and you have affinity with the cultural sector. You have the ability to convince others and you are capable of independent decision making within your areas of responsibility. You are familiar with the use of social media in a professional context. We are looking for someone who has  a relevant and active professional network in the public and private sector in the Western Cape Province. In exceptional situations, we will ask you to work outside of the regular working hours. You demonstrate integrity on the work floor and you handle information on a confidential basis.

Knowledge and skills:

  • Knowledge of the South African economy and its trends, policies, stakeholders and opinion makers;
  • Ability to integrate economic views and perspectives into other fields, including climate change and responsible business conduct;
  • Ability to offer policy advice on wide range of economic developments, socio-economic transformation and identity and culture;
  • Capacity to work collaboratively with colleagues and to serve as internal resource person, share knowledge and train colleagues when needed;
  • Capacity to solicit input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise;
  • Knowledge of foreign (economic) policy of the Netherlands;
  • Oral and written fluency English. Proficient knowledge of Dutch;
  • Skills in the use of social media in a professional context;

Working Environment:

The Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Cape Town has 11 employees who are responsible for a variety of policy sectors in the Western, Northern and Eastern Cape regions. The policy sectors cover economic, cultural, consular and internal affairs. The work is dynamic, hands-on with many external events and activities. At the same time, as the Netherlands’ representative in the Cape, Dutch interests and priorities are the main drivers of our engagement. Flexibility and cooperation with other team members are a prerequisite to being a successful candidate. Short term interns are regularly recruited to support the team.

Contract of employment

Fixed term contract for one year.
Two months’ probation period.
Indication of salary ZAR 53.000 – 58.000 gross depending on experience and qualifications
