King's Day message 2020

Dear all,

Today is our National Day also known as King’s Day. A day on which normally the whole country comes together to celebrate the birthday of King Willem-Alexander. This year everyone worldwide is asked to maintain physical distance, however this does not mean that we cannot come together.

These days which are difficult and confusing for everyone, connecting with others, sharing feelings, ideas and experiences is very important. This can be done, in many different ways. Today in the Netherlands instead of meeting in the streets dressed in Orange, people will remain at home. The national TV channels will show reruns of previous King’s Day celebrations. A big online flea market will be organized for everyone to participate in and at 4 pm everyone will raise a glass in honor of our King.

Here in Sri Lanka we have organised a virtual meeting for Dutch people in Sri Lanka and the Maldives to catch up and see how we are doing these days. Worldwide these last few months we have seen beautiful examples of how people, though apart, can still come together. Keep this up, be kind to each other, we all need it.

Your Majesty , for you this is also a different birthday than usual. On behalf of all the Dutch people in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, my team here at the embassy and myself, I wish you a special birthday and good health for you and your family.

Yours Sincerely,

Tanja Gonggrijp
