First “Working Group” Meeting on Tourism Development

As has been reported on previous Happenings, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Indonesia is trying to assist the Provincial Government of North Sumatera in its efforts to boost Tourism Development in Lake Toba, by providing linkages with Dutch expertise and knowledge institutions. Together with the Netherlands Education Support Office (NESO), Embassy representatives visited Medan last week to continue the discussion on the topic through the first Working Group meeting.

The Provincial Government, together with the Embassy and NESO, has established a Working Group with representatives from the various related agencies. The purpose of the Working Group is to come up with ideas and solutions on Tourism Development, with a focus on Dutch expertise. Hosted by Mr. Basarin Yunus Tanjung (Head of Bureau of Regional Autonomy and Cooperation), the first Working Group meeting was held on 19 November at the Provincial Government office. Representatives from the Public Work Office, Tourism Office, and other agencies also participated on the meeting. The Provincial Government mentioned that they have made budget available for different projects in the fiscal year of 2020 and invited the Netherlands to contribute with expertise.

During this meeting, the Embassy was represented by Carel de Groot (First Secretary), Lukas Rahmidin (Sr. Economic Policy Advisor), and Ony Hindra Kusuma (Honorary Consul in Medan), while NESO was represented by Nanya Burki.
