As one of the first countries in the world, South Korea experimented with the development of Smart Cities. In 2003, South Korea was at the forefront of the U-city (Ubiquitous city) in which all sorts of IT solutions were integrated into the urban infrastructure. Also, 16 years later, the South Korean government has the ambition to develop the most innovative smart city labs in the world. With a budget of € 3 billion, new 'smart city' neighborhoods are being built in 2 cities (Busan and Sejong). In addition, other South Korean cities have plans to renew and upgrade (old) city districts.

The Smart Cities cooperation between the Netherlands and South Korea has been strengthened during the past years. Last year the Netherlands organized a first Smart Cities mission to South Korea. On 5th July 2019, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations and the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) signed a smart city Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This MoU will increase the chances of sustainable cooperation and business.

Smart City Tracks

With the mission, we want to connect the Netherlands with Korea by offering innovative solutions and technologies and share ambitions to find an opportunity to expand markets with the challenges that Korean cities are facing. For this, we have divided Smart Cities into 4 themes (tracks):

  1. Sustainable urban development (water, circular energy, climate)
  2. Smart mobility (accessibility, logistics)
  3. Urban redesign (citizen participation and inclusive innovation)
  4. Reducing unemployment (promoting start-up exchange)

The 3rd World Smart City Expo

The Netherlands will be present - for the second year - at the 3rd Smart City Expo. The World Smart City Expo is one the largest Smart City expos in Asia with visitors from 60 different countries. The expo consists of an expo floor with multiple pavilions and a conference with interesting keynote speeches, roundtable meetings, seminars and matchmaking events. Dutch delegates will meet representatives from the public sector (city and national governments), the private sector and knowledge institutes active within the Smart City ecosystem.
