[Open Call] Cross-Cultural Design at the 2019 Beijing Design Week

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in China is in search of creative projects on the topic of cross-cultural design, interested in participating in the 2019 Beijing Design Week (BJDW). This year’s BJDW will take place from September 9 to 15. Entries including an application form can be submitted up to 28 July 2019.

This year we focus on the topic of cross-cultural design. The Embassy uses this open call to support and facilitate creative projects in order to further develop and profile their professional ability in China.

Context of the Open Call

Everywhere around the world, no matter the location, we face common challenges. Global warming, environmental issues and lack of public space are just some examples. Meanwhile globalization offers the opportunity to work together to tackle these challenges. However, though we are more interconnected than ever cultural differences still persist. As was the case with bartering goods decades ago, face to face exchange remains important in the international exchange of solutions. We believe design can play a key role in this. Not just to solve our global challenges, but in connecting cultures and enhancing cross-cultural cooperation. This year, for our participation in the Beijing Design Week we will focus on cross-cultural working methods for designers: it is both about multicultural teams designing together (and the issues they face) and about designing for users in other cultures.

Participating means:

  • Preparing a 23kg suitcase with materials for a cross-cultural exchange workshop
  • Sharing experiences with cross-cultural design during a workshop at the Beijing Design Week;
  • Contributing to a cross-cultural design publication;
  • Sharing experiences during the Dutch Design Week;
  • Expanding your network in China and the Netherlands.

What we expect from participants:

  • You are a professional in the creative industry;
  • You have experience with cross-cultural design;
  • Preferably, you have a Chinese partner who is already involved in your project;
  • You like speaking in public and in a workshop.

More information

During the Beijing Design Week the Embassy will organize six workshops in which the selected Dutch participants and their Chinese counterparts can exchange ideas about the cultural context of everyday design practice. The exact dates of the workshops will be determined based on the availability of the selected projects.

All workshops will be based on the same format: an interactive cross-cultural game which invites the Dutch and Chinese designers to share their design process based on their own casestudy.  The contents of the 23kg flight luggage can be used to visualize their thought process, for instance with pictures, sketchbooks or models.

The Embassy will select the participants together with Sino-Dutch design specialists and the workshop venue. All efforts are being made to create a delegation that is diverse in terms of age and experience. All selected projects will receive a fixed grant of 3.000,- euros which can be used to cover all the project costs (e.g. flight tickets, accommodation, luggage and production fees).
