On 17 and 18 January of this year, more than 270 legal experts, lawyers, academics and representatives of the business sector and NGO’s joined in the Indonesia-Netherlands Legal Update that took place at the Erasmushuis and Atma Jaya University in Jakarta. The INLU 2018 was opened at the Erasmus Huis by Yasonna H. Laoly S.H., M.Sc., Ph.D., Minister of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia, and Ambassador Rob Swartbol. The Chief Justice of the Indonesian Supreme Court (Mahkamah Agung) Prof. Dr. H. Muhammad Hatta Ali SH., MH., and the President of the Dutch Supreme Court (Hoge Raad) Prof. Dr. Maarten Feteris LL.M. also joined in the events and held a discussion on the longstanding cooperation between the two supreme courts.
Universities and legal institutions have been working together for decades on legal reform, laws and research. The INLU has reinforced these longstanding relations and paved the way for continuation of strategic collaboration in the context of the phasing out of the development cooperation program in the field of rule of law.
On 9 October, the report of the INLU was launched at Atma Jaya University. The report outlines the outcomes of the discussions on the different themes and serves as a guidance for new initiatives being undertaken between Dutch and Indonesian rule of law organisations and institutions.
