Statement of the Netherlands Embassy in Slovakia

Statement of the Netherlands Embassy in Slovakia on the murder of a journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancé Martina Kušnírová

The Embassy of the Netherlands is shocked by the terrible murder on journalist Ján Kuciak and his partner Martina Kušnírová. We extend our sincerest condolences to their family, friends, loved ones and Mr. Kuciak’s colleagues at and wish them strength in these difficult times. We join many in Slovakia in their sadness and grave concerns about this crime. We are particularly concerned about the statement of Police Chief Tibor Gašpar that the murder of Mr. Kuciak is likely to be connected with his work as an investigative journalist. A thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible is of utmost importance. We have taken note of the statements of the President and representatives of the Slovak government. Journalists have an indispensable function in open and democratic societies to guarantee the public’s right to be informed. They deserve our support and must be able to do their work in freedom and safety.
