On the motions accepted by the Dutch parliament on February 22, 2018, regarding the events of 1915

Today, the Lower House of the Dutch Parliament adopted two motions regarding the events of 1915. In one motion, the House expressed that it recognizes the events of 1915 as genocide. In its response to this motion, the government has announced it will not follow the House in this assessment.

In the other motion, the House calls upon the government to participate on a governmental level in the upcoming commemoration ceremony in Yerevan, and subsequently every 5 years.

In its response to this motion, the government has indicated that a presence at the commemoration would not implicate a recognition of the events as genocide.

The government of the Netherlands underlines that that the terrible events of 1915 deserve respect and attention, and supports efforts of Turkey and Armenia to resolve all related matters in a respectful dialogue.
