TexRec Conference: Opportunities and Challenges in Textile Waste Recycling in Macedonia

The Embassy supported the organisation of the first TexRec Conference which took place on 29 June 2017. Representatives of government institutions and the business sector discussed the opportunities and challenges of textile waste recycling in Macedonia. The conference organised by EPI Centar International  was opened by the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Macedonia, Dragan Tevdovski.

Dutch experts Anton Luiken from Alcon Advies BV and Martien Ector from the Dutch Customs Authority were invited to share the Dutch and European experiences in treating textile waste.

Ljupco Dimovski from EPI Centar International pointed out the importance of this issue for the Macedonian economy but also for the environment while USAID Acting Mission Director David Reside expressed their readiness to support the further development of one of the biggest industrial sectors in Macedonia.


Minister of Finance Dragan Tevdovski opens the conference

In his opening address Minister of Finance Dragan Tevdovski pointed out that together with the other public institutions he will do everything in his power to help finding a solution to the problem of textile waste recycling and that the new Government will support the small and medium enterprises and help them grow and further develop. He also invited the representatives of the Dutch companies present at the conference to share their good practices in the field of corporate social responsibility.


Ambassador Wouter Plomp

Ambassador Wouter Plomp emphasised that textile waste recycling contributes to a healthier and safer environment, and that it is at the same time beneficial for the people and the companies to which it brings more profit: 'Instead of polluting the soil and air, textile waste can also be a valuable resource that can be used to make new products: Literally, turning waste into money' - he said.
